The fall of socialism

Goodbye Lenin! is such a great film! It’s an acerbic political satire on how constructs, ideas & relativity of perception can impact our lives. A very engaging film on a personal and social level.

The collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was a historically remarkable event not just for the Germans, but for the whole world. Aside from reuniting two exceedingly different political systems, the incident also marked a watershed for the capitalist uprising occurring within many of the other socialist states. Goodbye Lenin! is one of the films the explores the impact of German Unification, and it does so on a “micro-social” level (I hope I’m using the term “micro-social” correctly), which makes it, I guess, more relatable and heartfelt.

I also liked how the film is carefully nonpartisan–it doesn’t appear sympathetic towards any political institution and it pokes fun at the absurdities of both communist and capitalist societies.
